Polar Latitudes Expeditions Introduces Discoverer to Its Fleet, Expanding Antarctic Adventures for Global Travellers

Polar Latitudes Expeditions

Polar expedition cruise specialist Polar Latitudes Expeditions has announced the addition of a new vessel, Discoverer, to its fleet. The ship, which carries a strong legacy in polar exploration, is set to commence Antarctic voyages in the 2026–27 season.

Previously operating as Exploris One, the vessel will replace Seaventure within the company’s Antarctica programme. This transition marks a significant step in Polar Latitudes’ long-term strategy to shift from chartered ships to owned vessels—enabling greater control over the overall expedition experience and onboard offerings.

Commenting on the development, Anders Kristensen, Chief Commercial Officer, said that owning the vessel allows the company to curate every aspect of the journey more closely—from expedition design to onboard learning experiences—ensuring a more immersive and enriching Antarctic exploration.

A Vessel with a Rich Polar Heritage

Built at the renowned Rauma shipyard in Finland, Discoverer has navigated some of the world’s most remote regions under notable names such as Silver Explorer and Prince Albert II.

The ship underwent an extensive refurbishment in 2023, featuring upgraded accommodations, modernised systems, and enhanced public spaces. Additional upgrades are planned ahead of its Antarctic debut to align with Polar Latitudes’ small-ship expedition philosophy, which emphasises deeper exploration, expert-led insights, and responsible travel practices.

Expanded Antarctic Voyages

From the 2026–27 Antarctic season onwards, Discoverer will operate all previously scheduled departures assigned to Seaventure. Guests with existing bookings will be accommodated in equivalent cabin categories on board the new vessel.

The addition also enables the company to expand its sailing calendar, particularly during peak travel months, offering more opportunities to explore Antarctica.

Among the standout itineraries will be the highly sought-after Crossing the Antarctic Circle voyage—a bucket-list milestone for expedition travellers worldwide.

Beyond Antarctica: New Frontiers

Outside the Antarctic season, Discoverer will sail under sister brand Heritage Expeditions, exploring remote and lesser-visited regions.

In early 2027, the vessel is expected to chart new territory through the striking Chilean fjords, marking Polar Latitudes’ entry into Patagonia for the first time.

Rising Demand from India

This expansion comes amid growing interest in expedition cruising among Indian travellers, particularly within the luxury and adventure segments. Increasingly, travellers are seeking unique, once-in-a-lifetime experiences to destinations such as Antarctica and the Arctic.

With its focus on small-group travel, expert-led expeditions, and immersive wildlife encounters, Polar Latitudes aims to deliver meaningful journeys while maintaining a strong commitment to sustainability and responsible exploration.

A Strategic Milestone

Founder John McKeon described the addition of Discoverer as a pivotal moment in the company’s growth. While acknowledging the successful voyages undertaken with Seaventure, he noted that the new vessel represents the next phase in building a more robust and comprehensive expedition cruise portfolio.
