Abu Dhabi Announces Opening of Guggenheim Abu Dhabi on 11 December 2026
A Landmark Museum in Abu Dhabi Rooted in the UAE and Shaping Global Artistic Dialogue
Abu Dhabi is set to mark another milestone in its cultural journey with the opening of Guggenheim Abu Dhabi on 11 December 2026. Announced by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, the landmark museum will further cement the emirate’s position as one of the world’s leading cultural capitals.
Dedicated to modern and contemporary art, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will celebrate artistic expression from the 1960s to the present day, bringing together diverse perspectives from across the globe. Designed as a space for dialogue, discovery, and exchange, the museum aims to connect cultures, inspire visitors, and encourage future generations to engage with art in meaningful ways.
Located within the iconic Saadiyat Cultural District, the museum joins an exceptional collection of world-renowned institutions, including Louvre Abu Dhabi, Zayed National Museum, Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, and teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi. Together, these institutions position the district among the most significant cultural destinations worldwide.
His Excellency Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, described the opening as “a defining moment” in Abu Dhabi’s cultural evolution. He emphasized that the museum reflects the emirate’s belief that culture serves as a bridge between people while fostering creativity, learning, and cross-cultural understanding.
Dr. Mariët Westermann, Director and CEO of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, said the museum’s collection will be both locally rooted and globally connected, showcasing works from every continent while highlighting the artistic voices of the region. She added that Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will become a place of curiosity, inspiration, and joy for visitors from the UAE and around the world.
Designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is an architectural masterpiece situated on Saadiyat Island. The museum spans approximately 80,000 square metres, featuring 30 galleries, an expansive central atrium, and 23,000 square metres of outdoor exhibition space. Its striking sculptural cones not only define the building’s skyline but also enhance sustainability through natural ventilation and shading.
Since 2009, the museum has been building an internationally significant collection that explores major themes in modern and contemporary art, including abstraction, popular culture, storytelling, land, and language. Visitors will experience flexible, interconnected galleries that encourage exploration through relationships between artists, cultures, and ideas rather than a traditional chronological approach.
Once open, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will stand among the world’s most significant museum developments, reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s growing role as a global centre for artistic production, cultural dialogue, and creative innovation.
